All you need to know about UEFA Euro 2024 Champioship: An Overview

The 2024 UEFA European Football Championship, also known as UEFA Euro 2024, is the 17th edition of the UEFA European Championship. This is a quadrennial international football championship organised by UEFA for the European men’s national teams of its member associations. Germany is the host nation of the tournament, which commenced on June 14 and ends July 14, 2024. The tournament is made up of 24 teams, with Georgia being the only team making their European Championship finals debut.

The tournament is the third time that European Championship matches are played on German territory and the second time in reunified Germany, as West Germany hosted the tournament’s 1988 edition. Four matches of the multi-national Euro 2020 were played in Munich. It is the first time the competition is held in what was formerly East Germany, with Leipzig as a host city, as well as the first major tournament since the 2006 FIFA World Cup that Germany serves as a solo host nation.

Italy were the defending champions, having won the 2020 final against England on penalties, but were eliminated in the round of 16 by Switzerland.

The group stage concluded on June 26, with the knockout stage beginning on June 29. As the host nation, Germany were seeded in Group A and occupied position A1; they therefore played the opening match – a 5-1 win against Scotland – at the Munich Football Arena on Friday June 14.

The draw for the final tournament was held in Hamburg on Saturday December 2. The groups are as follows:

Group A: Germany, Scotland, Hungary, Switzerland
Group B: Spain, Croatia, Italy, Albania
Group C: Slovenia, Denmark, Serbia, England
Group D: Poland, Netherlands, Austria, France
Group E: Belgium, Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine
Group F: Türkiye, Georgia, Portugal, Czechia1

How teams advance at Euro 2024

After winning their respective regions’ qualifying tournaments, 24 teams advance to the Euros.

GROUP STAGE

The group stage was the first challenge they faced when they arrived to the event. The 24 teams were divided into six groups of four teams per in 2024.
In the group stage, each team plays the other three once in a standard round-robin format. In the group stage, a win earned three points, a draw gave one, and a defeat earned none. The initial tiebreakers are goals and goal difference if teams are tied on points.
Each group’s top two finishers as well as the top four third-place teams moved on to the knockout stage. Starting with the Round of 16, those teams were placed into a predefined bracket according to their group standing.

KNOCKOUT STAGE

Every match is single elimination starting in the Round of 16 and continuing through to the championship. Teams move on to the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final after advancing from the Round of 16.
In the event that there is a tie after ninety minutes of regulation play, the sides compete in thirty minutes of extra time before, if needed, going into penalty shootouts.

How fans obtained match tickets

Tickets for the venues were sold directly by UEFA via its website, or distributed by the football associations of the 24 finalists. Ticket sales started on October 3, 2023. More than 80% of 2.7 million tickets for the 51 tournament matches were available for the fans of the participating teams and the general public. Fans of each participating team allocated 10,000 tickets for group stage matches, 6,000 tickets for the round of 16 and quarterfinals, 7,000 for the semifinals, and 10,000 for the final match. Over 50 million applications from 206 countries were received.

Besides fans of Germany, the most tickets were requested by fans supporting Turkey, Hungary, England, Albania and Croatia.

Conclusion

The Euro 2024 tournament is a pinnacle of international football competition, where 24 teams clash in a thrilling display of skill, strategy, and sportsmanship. The group stage and knockout rounds push teams to their limits, testing their resolve and determination. With the top two teams from each group and the four best third-place finishers advancing to the knockout stage, the competition intensifies as the stakes grow higher. As the tournament progresses, fans will be treated to heart-stopping moments, dramatic turnarounds, and heroic performances. In the end, only one team will emerge victorious, lifting the coveted Euro 2024 trophy and etching their name in the annals of football history.
